  18. <p>    The U.S. Navy's streak of misfortune continues. A Sea Sparrow
  19. missile fired off the aircraft carrier Saratoga slammed into the
  20. bridge of a Turkish destroyer in the Aegean Sea, killing five
  21. sailors including the ship's captain. Chief of Naval Operations
  22. Admiral Frank Kelso could offer no explanation for the
  23. accident, but preliminary indications were that human error was
  24. to blame. The incident, which occurred during NATO joint
  25. maneuvers, is being investigated by a team of three senior U.S.
  26. admirals.

  28. <p>    TEMPORARY RELIEF

  30. <p>    Former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger has won a big one
  31. in the legal wrangles leading toward his trial in connection with
  32. the Iran-contra affair. Federal Judge Thomas Hogan in
  33. Washington dismissed a critical count charging Weinberger with
  34. obstruction of Congress in concealing the existence of more than
  35. 1,700 pages of handwritten notes taken during key meetings in
  36. 1985 and 1986. Weinberger still faces counts of lying to
  37. Congress about Saudi financial support for the contras and
  38. delivery of U.S. missiles to Iran.
